Youth Baseball Tournaments – Team Building

As a coach looking for a team that will be successful in youth baseball tournaments, you need to choose your players wisely! Be cautious in selecting the right players for your team. You want to choose the healthiest, most motivated, and most talented players out there to be sure your team does well. That said, sometimes you do not find a star player until the season as already started.

To have a great team, it is necessary to add this player, but you are concerned about how the team will react when you add another person to the mix. Read this article to learn how to handle this delicate situation in youth baseball tournaments.

You put the best team together that you could and everyone was working hard during the off-season. Then, perhaps a new kid moved to town, or a parent got their kid involved late in the game and he has real talent. You definitely do not want to lose a star player, so the question is, how will you incorporate him into the team? The best way to start is with a conversation.

Youth Baseball Tournaments – Adding Players

Do not just bring the new player to the practice unannounced. Have a meeting with your team ahead of time in the beginning of a practice. Begin by explaining that the goal is to have the best team possible, and reminding them that everyone on the team is an integral member. Then explain the situation. Do not go into detail about why the player did not start earlier, but do tell the members that this person will be an asset to the team.

Also explain to players that there will be no tolerance for negative behavior towards the new player and that everyone should be encouraging him and treat him as apart of the team. The key is to stress that this person is going to make the team better and stronger, and we all need to look out for what is best for the team. Let your players know that none of them are going to be replaced and that no one is more important than anyone else. This addition will just make them that much better.

Youth Baseball Tournaments – Final Thoughts

After this discussion, continue practice as usual, and also let your players know what this new person’s position will be. If he will be a pitcher, for example, make sure you do not eliminate the other pitcher completely, as this will definitely reduce morale. Perhaps you can have the player take turns at different positions, so no one feels like their role has been minimized.

After the discussion, bring the player to the next meeting. Introduce him to the players and then get started. Do not dwell on how wonderful and talented the new guy is, as this will make everyone else feel bad. While he may be a star player, you do not want to reduce morale.

Adding a player to your youth baseball tournaments can be a tricky thing to do after a season has already started. If represented in the correct way, however, your players will likely welcome the new player and it will make your team so much stronger and perform better in youth baseball tournaments.
