3 Tips to Consider When Playing In A National Baseball Tournament
“Why History May Repeat Itself”
Does the tournament give you any history? If not, why not? Who is running the tournament? Do they have any prior experience? Often times the organization will post results or information from previous years. Contact the tournament director via email or phone and ask him or her where the information is. You may have to dig a bit, but you can find it.
Historical information also serves as a great indicator about the tournament itself. It shows how well it is managed. It displays care and honesty in the tournament. If someone balks or hesitates to give you information, it indicates a couple of things: 1. they didn’t keep the details which show a lack of organization skills, 2. They didn’t have enough teams in the previous tournament and they want to withhold the details, 3. People were not happy with the quality and organization of the event or 4. it’s a brand new event.
Communication is critical for your team to have fun and still compete at a successful level. It’s a huge component in a tournament since you’re buying a service instead of a product. In the “off” season, more than 24 hours of waiting for a return email/call is a sign of an unorganized event director and poor customer service. This will only become a larger problem during the event.
If it rains, poor communication will become a nightmare for your families and players. A great example of a well organized event is the SlumpBuster® and Omaha NIT event in Omaha, NE. They’ve got ten years of history posted. They include testimonials and respond quickly to customers. The event has a national appeal to it….it doesn’t hurt that 500 teams from 40 states participate either…or the fact that it’s during the NCAA® College World Series®.
Management – the third and final ingredient.
The third thing to look for is if the event director knows the game. A tournament director that is familiar with the game is usually going to make good decisions on the fly and his bracket will reflect the history, location and quality of teams. He won’t pair up teams from the same town, teams that have already played each other or teams that are all the same level.
They will have a quality mix of teams so you can test yourself at multiple levels. If you’re looking for a quality event experience that your team can compete in and get national attention, check out the event page for the SlumpBuster tournament
