Baseball Tournament Coaching Responsibility

Your team is participating in the regional baseball tournament, and everyone is excited. As the coach of a traveling team, you have a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. Coaches have a lot of roles other than coach – teacher, mentor, role model, and sometimes disciplinarian. To have a successful team, you need to know how to keep your players in line and motivated on and off the field. The following tips will get you ready for the regional baseball tournament by showing you how to coach and how not to coach.

Baseball Tournament – Your Players Are Your Responsibility

As a coach, the number one thing you need to be is a supportive, positive person. It has been proven that players respond better to positive reinforcement, rather than criticism.

This does not mean that you need to be a pushover or should ignore lazy behavior and playing for team members, but you should do so in a non-demeaning, and motivating fashion. Instead of saying, “Run faster you bum,” try “Hustle! Hustle! I know you can run faster than that!”

Try creating goals with your team and reaching them. Have daily discussions and meetings about how far everyone is going in reaching their athletic goals. Create a motivating atmosphere. It is also important to encourage teamwork on and off the field. If members of your team fight off the field how can they truly work as a team on the field? Plan activities for players to get to know each other and build camaraderie to prepare for the regional baseball tournament.

Baseball Tournament Control – How Do You Control Teenagers?

In addition to being a good coach, you should have your players’ respect by laying down the law. This does not mean yelling, but simply stating the expectations of behavior before the regional baseball tournament. Let your players know how they should act towards each other and chaperons, and state that defiant behavior will not be accepted.

Also let them know about clear consequences, and then follow through should the rules be broken. Then point out again how they are a team and need to work together and by following the rules they will be a responsible disciplined team and the best they can be.

That said, you should not go to a regional baseball tournament alone with 20 or more players, especially if they are teenagers. You need to make sure there are a good number of chaperons and volunteers to keep an eye on everyone.

You and the parents may feel like you are on a mini vacation if you get to travel for a game, but you need to make sure you are on your best behavior. Remember, you have young impressionable kids watching what you say and do. Make sure that you are always being a good role model for your students, because they will do what you do.

Refrain from cursing, even if it is to an adult and you are not addressing the players. Refrain from drinking and smoking as well, and make sure chaperons do too. While it is perfectly legal for you to drink, players will not understand that, and will be more encouraged to engage in those activities. Besides, drinking and smoking are not the healthiest activities, and don’t you want to encourage your players to be healthy?

Remember that you are more than a coach to these players – you are a mentor and a role model. As such, you should take your role seriously by setting boundaries, setting a good example, and encouraging your players. Do this, and your team will be the best team they can be in the regional baseball tournament.
